Ellen Meers
Ellen Meers (°1996) graduated from KASK in Ghent in the summer of 2021 with several works that balance the border between graphics and painting. Meers starts her works with classical, analogue graphics, namely monotypes. She prints sheets of paper in different sizes with colour areas and line structures in vibrant colours. She draws and paints enigmatic symbols on these monotypes that fluctuate between recognisable shapes and unfamiliar silhouettes. Underlying these symbols are anecdotes and memories from her childhood or stories that family members shared during interviews. Meers creates her symbols, such as lemmata, for her work. Placed side by side, they form the story of a particular moment but are captured in enigmatic images that together are reminiscent of the hieroglyphs of the ancient Egyptians. As such, they are also building blocks for the viewer to put together their narrative or memory precisely because the shapes have a mysterious but recognisable and open character.
